Driving Your CJ300 Jeep Wrangler In The USA
Mar 10, 2020

As more and more families choose to holiday in the USA, motorists will find driving in the States presents a new set of challenges.

CJ300 Jeep Wrangler owners will have to adjust to driving on the right side of the road, bigger cars and roads and getting used to different road etiquette before they can get behind the wheel.

Read on for our guide to the documentation, equipment and road etiquette you require to drive legally and with relative ease in the USA.

What do I need when driving in the USA?

You must carry a full and valid driving license, proof of insurance and ownership along with your passport.

The car must also come with warning triangles that can be placed by the roadside.

Most US states have banned using a phone while driving, we would advise using a hands free system whilst driving.

Also bear in mind that the US has road tolls that are often placed before entering cities and usually charge a standard fee. Driving into New York for example will cost $14.00 - $9.75 during off peak hours.

Petrol Prices

If UK fuel prices give you a fright then prices in the US should keep you at ease.

Petrol and diesel are priced at around 40p per litre meaning you can tour the country in your CJ300 without having to worry about the cost of filling up.

Insurance and breakdown cover

We would advise you to spend a little extra on insurance and breakdown cover. You will be driving on unfamiliar roads, and there’s always the risk that something will go wrong.

Watch out for undertaking

Undertaking could well be the biggest culture shock for UK motorists driving in the US. Undertaking is not classed as illegal, and takes place on most motorways. US drivers are not privy to indicate whilst changing lanes either, which will make you watch your mirrors even more closely.

Take your turn at the crossroads

If you come to a four-way intersection without lights, the car that arrived first has priority and then the next. This will take some getting used to, so when approaching intersections slow down and keep an eye out on who’s arrived to the stop mark when.
