Choose your personalised number plate with a little bit of help from A. Kahn Design
3rd Feb 2014

Until fairly recently, buying personalised number plates was seen to be something only done by the rich and famous. That no longer holds true. Those who wish to make a statement or see them as an investment are now buying private registrations.

From dedicated parents who purchase number plates as ‘investments’ for their young children to everyday people who purchase number plates to sell to their friends for twice the price, more and more people are joining the rush to buy up desirable number plates. You never know, with the likes of PR07 TYP up for just £650 and N33 WWS up for £1,250 they could just be the bargain you are looking for.

A little advice before we start getting into the nitty-gritty of how to buy: you can\'t use a number plate to make a vehicle appear newer than it is, but you can use one to disguise how old a vehicle is. Remember to decide on your price range and stick to it. Private plates are subject to VAT - so check whether this is to be added on or whether it is included in the price already.

Once you\'ve decided you want to buy a private plate, and have set your price range, remembering VAT, this is how you go about making the purchase:

You can buy from a private seller or a business such as A Kahn Design, but as we will remind you when you do buy from us, all transactions are subject to DVLA (in case you were wondering, that\'s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) fees - the fee is normally £80 (vehicle to vehicle) or £105 if the mark is currently being held on a certificate. However, make sure you know what you will be paying in total, so as to avoid any nasty surprises.

The other way to buy is at auction. The DVLA also holds regular public auctions. You can bid by post or telephone; or, for a fee, a dealer will bid for you.

When you have secured your number, you will be sent a certificate of entitlement (V750) that is valid for 12 months. Note that you do not \"own\" your number as a piece of property. It is assigned to a vehicle, although, under the Retention Scheme, it may be held temporarily on a certificate. If you do not assign the number to a vehicle within the year you can apply for an extension of the certificate for another 12 months, which costs £25.

To have the number transferred to your vehicle, you must contact your local Vehicle Registration Office. You will need to produce your V750 certificate of entitlement, vehicle registration document (V5), current tax disc and test certificate.

At Kahn Design, we have many clients who have been satisfied with our no holds barred advice on which private number plates are likely to not only hold their value, but increase in the future.

We also discuss the merits of each registration mark, the positives and the negatives, in a positive and transparent manner and show you exactly how to minimize your risk. We can proudly say we never have and never would advise a client to invest in a poor quality personalised registration.
